Does my plant need registration?
People often ask “does this need to be registered?” as one question. Queensland actually asks two: does the design need registration, and does the individual item need registration? Many items need one, some need both, and most plant needs neither.

Before deciding whether registration applies, build a dependable pressure-equipment record from the nameplate, design data and hazard-level inputs.
How to use this summary
- Do not start with a guessed tank size — start with the nameplate and design data.
- If pressure, volume or hazard-level inputs are uncertain, reconstruct the equipment record first.
- Poor history, repairs or visible changes justify integrity review before relying on the current basis.

This check follows the Queensland WHS Regulation. Harmonised jurisdictions are similar, but fees, forms and local regulator expectations should be confirmed before acting.

The two registrations in plain English
The cleanest way to avoid confusion is to separate the registered design from the registered individual item.
Item registration
About the individual item: registered with the regulator in the state where it operates, typically supported by a competent-person safe-to-operate statement.
The exceptions matter
Gas cylinders, LP gas automotive vessels and serially produced vessels can be carved out of item registration even at higher pressure-equipment hazard levels.
Registration is not compliance
Inspection, maintenance, alteration control, safe-use information and records continue for the life of the plant.

Context: A 500 L receiver at 1,000 kPa needs its hazard level confirmed before registration can be screened properly.
Screening view: The practical pathway is to recover design pressure, volume, contents and documentation, then classify the hazard level before deciding whether design registration, item registration or both are indicated.

Cranes
Franna-style pick-and-carry crane, 15 t
Context: A mobile crane with rated capacity greater than 10 t is a classic example where both design and item registration should be screened.
Screening view: Registration does not remove the need for major inspection, maintenance records, operator competency and safe-use controls.

Pressure piping
Skid-mounted pressure piping
Context: Piping may sit beside a pressure vessel and still follow a different registration outcome.
Screening view: The registration answer may be no, while the engineering answer still includes AS 4041 design, supports, testing, inspection and professional engineering review.
